A walk in the woods
So after the dubious first date, I collected myself and asked the bumblebee on a second date. Since she works strange hours at an old folks home, and I have class in the evening late afternoon was the best option. I thought we should get away from modern things and take a walk in Ice House Canyon.
The time is set, and we roll out. We arrive at the top of the mountain fully enjoying eachothers company. She is friendly, outgoing, and nice to be arround.
We start to hike and I lean that she has a wicked good golf game, as she played in high school. (note to self, dont make stupid bets to be setteled over golf scores). The day is bright and clear but crisp requiring pants and a hoodie, great for a hike.
We start off on the walk and things are going great. I dont want to get into too much detail because this story has other motivations..
Eventually we come to an obsticle, its a concrete wash, with 2 big steps down and a flat part for rain runoff and 2 steps back up. on either side of the top are logs to walk across. I walk across a log using my incredible diver ballance. She does not. Turns out she is not comfortable ballancing on things like that, I offer to hold hands on the other log and we can do it together, but still no sway, she walks the steps.
we walk some more all is well, the scenery is beautiful and so is she. (even if she is on the short side for my taste) I get bored of being on the trail, so I strike out to cross the stream. she follows and then gets nervous about crossing the stream. I tell her its easy like ballancing on rocks over hot lava, but instead of dying like mario, you just get wet if you fall in. she chuckles and we approach. I insist that she goes first so that she can make every step, since my legs are much longer, I do not want to strand her in the middle.
she begins, and its not technical, just stepping on rocks that are close together. As she reaches the middle she turns and smiles, and I get the feeling that this is not nearly as hard as she had imagined it to be. With her next few steps she nears the other bank. Then the inevitible happens.
I stare into her eyes and reach for her hand, then step forward missplacing my left foot on a rocks edge, and Sploosh thwack I’m in the drink. totally soaking, and gasping because of the cold water.
just kidding that did not happen. however this next part really did. As it is fall the leaves have disembarked from their usual places of habitation (branches) and migrated to the floor. Silly leaves, but super fun to make crunch with bike tires… well in Ice house canyon, the stream has collected many leaves, some float like boats, some sink, others get washes downstream. Of those that float some become caught in the small pools created by rocks with no fast current creating a leaf crust of sotrs, you can see water carefully if you look for the pattern of unnaturally flat area, with sparkles in beteween leaves.
well What happened next is she turned back arround and upon taking a next step she shrieked! I get a boost of adrenaline after a moment of hesitation, screams do that to most people…(or else im a huge coward for hesitating) as my eyse asses the situation she has one foot on a rock, and the other foot under a pile of leaf crust water… the foot comes shooting out of the drink, and brings dripps and splatters that shine like blue stars as they fall upon rocks. I think well she is not dead, and cannot be hypothermic just yet, but that was a good scream, my compliments to the diaphram, and vocal chords…
yep she stepped into water crossing a stream. N00b mistake… but not unreasonable to make, still ( pause for effect ). We continue across the stream, and all is ok, her foot is wet maybe to 4 inches above the ankle, full shoe submission and squishy sock and shoe syndrome to the max. she says we are cool to keep on hiking, so we do. What a champ, I would ask to go home, as wet feet are uncomfortable.
we continue our trip, and have a picknick on top of a large rock. I enjoy her company, however realize that she is not so adventerous. Also she does not do nearly as many dumb things as I do…
we return to the car, just after dusk. Good timing, another 5 minutes and it would have been dark something fierce… Overall I had a great time. Still undecided as to what I want from this relationship, but time will tell.
Impressions: funny, smart, cute, said yes to going hiking, no complaining, accepted compliments, and also enjoyed her birthday gift.
